U.S. Airborne commander confers with officers. Major General Maxwell D. Taylor, Commander of the 101st. U.S. Airborne Division confers with officers in the war-torn town of Neville, Belgium. The 101st is the Division which made the heroic stand at Bastogne for eight days and nine nights, throwing back successive German attacks. General Taylor flew in from Washington and with an advance patrol of the Fourth Armored Division, Third U.S. Army, jeeped through enemy lines to join forces with the encircled airborne soldiers, December 27, 1944. By January 21, 1945, the Nazis were reported withdrawing from what remained of the Ardennes bulge. Advances up to eight miles by the Third U.S. Army carried the Americans to within eight miles of the Reich frontier at one point on the central sector. [Belgian Military Mission - Civil Affairs]
