R.A.F. "Mystery" plane smashes altitude record. Reaches 49,967 feet. Flying the "mystery" Bristol monoplane specially built for the attempt, Squadron Leader F.R.D. Swain broke the world altitude record when he attained a height of 49,967 feet - 1,200 feet higher than that reached by the Frenchman, George Detre a short while ago.
