The most bombed target in Burma, the port and town of Akyab on the west coast, was captured by the Allies on 3.1.45 Supporting the land and seaborne invasion, R.A.F., U.S.A.A.F., Indian, Canadian, New Zealand and Australian & aircrews of Eastern Air Command, all played their part. The first British bomb fell on the island in July 1942, two months after the Japanese occupation. Since then systematic bombing has destroyed 80% of the administrative and industrial properties of the town. Akyab was one of the main forwad air bases us ed by the Japanese until Allied air power made this impossible. Picture shows: The actual invasion in progress.
