HARRY S. TRUMAN, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Harry S. Truman, 33rd President of the United States, took office on April 12, according to the American practice that the Vice-President shall serve out the term of a deceased President. Mr. Truman was elected Vice-President last November, after having been nominated for the office by the Democratic Party National Convention in June. He previously served for 11 years as a member of the U.S. Senate from Missouri. As a Senator, Mr. Truman was very active in legislation concerning transportation, aviation and other economic affairs. He gained national prominence during the war as Chairman of a special Senate committee investigating the national defense program, which became known as the "Truman Committee". Before his national political career began, Mr. Truman was a County Judge in his home state of Missouri. In the last war he was a Captain in the Field Artillery.
