ST.LOUIS, MO. - A hospital operating room with its walls crowded by fantastic oil paintings so that the patient's mind will be distracted during the course of survey, was just been opened in the Rand-Johnson Surgical Division of the Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Figures which depict subjects done in modernistic fashion adorn the walls and cieling of the room in brilliant colors. The purpose of the idea, which is the first ever attempted in a hospital operating room, is to divert the mind of the patient immediately upon entering the room. Experiments have proved that the patient gazes about him at the queer figures and continues to do so while under the local anesthetic. The new operating room is used only for cases where local anesthetic is required in bone surgery and when the patient returns for continued treatment. 1/20/32.
