NEW YORK.-Is this a secret arsenal?-No sir, its just part of some two thousand brand new pneumatic mail tube carriers that will be put into service to carry some six million letters daily underneath New York’s streets next month. Few people are aware that there are some 57 miles of pneumatic tubes running up and down and across Manhattan between the General Post office and its branches, and shooting mail at high speed under compressed air beneath the city’s crust. They’ve been doing this for the past thirty years and during this time not a single letter has been lost. Each carrier holds 600 letters. Bills have been sent to Congress urging this system between post offices and mail airports to expedite delivery of mail. This system, it is believed, saves a quarter-million dollars in salaries and transportation. 6/23/31.
